Goodness and Moral Dissonance

There is a frank and direct discomfort, if not pain, in any action one takes that generates moral dissonance within one’s considerations. When you cross grain what you believe to be good you will feel the ‘soul scratch’. I frequently hear about people going to polls ‘holding their noses’ before they vote. Invariably this means they are voting for a candidate who has a record of moral repugnance. That is moral dissonance and a very slippery slope, for once your decision making process develops a loose hinge that connects your morality to your actions you are in serious trouble. The sense of good you carry within you has a flawless detector of rationalized evil. Some traditions call this your conscience. The last person you want to deceive in the critical election season we are facing is yourself. You can go to the polls and vote for the imperfect candidate, but when the vote stinks . . . pull up and reconsider. Somethings in life cannot be rationalized. They are face value.
