In this last month, I have traveled through many of the towns in which I have lived over the course of my life thus far. In this journey I have had coffee and conversations with many old friends and delivered a eulogy for one who has passed. A couple of themes emerged as I made the pilgrimage. The dominate theme was how tired, frustrated, frightened and/or actually bored people were becoming with narrative of our divided culture and nation. The second theme was often brought up as a secondary thread asking what is the nature of good work or activity in times like these? A part of me was encouraged by the positive nature of the confusion in these conversations. Conservatives, liberals, religious, nonreligious, were asking the questions in the pursuit of good. Only people locked in their own absolute certainty were without questions and guided by proclamation rather than exploration. The extreme positions at both ends of the poles seem to be so restrictive one must check both brains and empathy at the door to fit into their room of unquestioning certainty. So to the curious, seeking, and creative, I invite you to join one another in the mission of finding and doing good. To the extremists I have this advice; “don’t light a match.”
