Good, Accountability, Justice

We have had two trials this month of national importance. In both trials it seems justice was served, but to what end? Both parties, former President and current President’s son were found guilty by a jury. Both parties face sentencing which is a guideline enriched form of judgement in itself. This is why we have judges. Prison for longer or shorter terms is in prospective for both persons convicted.

Good in this writer’s mind seeks first a sense of rehabilitation for both these now white collar criminals. It appears one of our national convicts has already began a rehabilitation process, and the other remains adamantly in denial that he did anything wrong. The role of judgement in the context of this word ‘good’ needs to fit the person being sentenced. The ‘bottom of the barrel’ is the instructor in both instances. One has found the bottom and is in the process of surfacing, and the second has been floated by hubris and money for a lifetime eschewing the barrel bottom’s lessons. May the judge factor in the ‘what-good-it-might-do’ question in the construction of accountability these next few months.
