For some people good and power are contradictions and for others, near perfect synonyms. Of course both positions are false which is why we have two different words representing two distinct forces in this universe. The formal definitions of these two terms tend to wonder and wind. Some words seem to exist to stimulate the non-conscious universe that operates in every human being.
The word ‘power’ can be used both as a noun and a verb, which makes it useful in any election cycle. Power is useful to have and hard to give up. No one resents the powers of four young persons pushing your car out of the snow bank. The pushers have power, and they ‘power’ the car back on the road. Your sense of these people might be that they are ‘good’ people. Power, however, standing alone is amoral and ready to be used for good or evil. Hierarchy is another human invention and represents a kind of pipe wrench designed to make things happen and the design of hierarchy is so successful that it truly has become a synonym for power. Despite what people think, hierarchy is not evil or bad, but like power, it can save or take lives just like a pipe wrench can fix or break pipes.
In training The Good Decision, my offering on this topic is that hierarchy and power depend entirely on the human beings wielding them to express their morality and goodness. The President this week gave up power which given the vulnerability such a relinquishment puts him in takes courage. He has to know his opponents will exploit the very morality he has shown, and some of the opposition’s responses to his decision have been close to depraved. Morality, ethics, and goodness are fueled and fired through the chambers of the human heart/mind. Power as well as hierarchy are waiting for their instructions. This country is built and maintained on a hierarchy no less than your own neuro-system, so the vote your morality as well as your pragmatism because your children and the world are watching how you use your one unit of power.
