Show me a high performance athlete who doesn’t understand the importance of the center of gravity. You can’t.   They may not have the language for it but they understand the feel of the center, and when they fall even a touch off-center the putt doesn’t go into the hole, the football travels high for the receiver and the free throw just bounces off the rim.  So how do we expect to run a nation that hasn’t a center.  Answer: We can’t!.  Without a center we look like clowns doing a parody of normal. This divisive administration is teaching the world a lesson: don’t work in our shadow because any minute now we might fall on you.  We might fall because we don’t understand the critical importance of center in a high performance world.

The the weight of the center that has always kept this nation not only afloat but one leap ahead of a developing world.  The center has been in the past has been anchored in the across-the-aisle moderates. These are people who respect nature, limits as well as strengths, and have the skills of interaction, confrontation, negotiation.  These were the people who understood timing and eschewed purely emotional reaction in the same way a 18 wheel trucker feathers the sharp curves on a highway.  Now they are accused of disloyalty from the right if they want to delve into serious complexity such as immigration and human migrations.  They are berated for being milk toast by both the right and the left wing activists if they actually want to consider more than a narrow set of interests. We have hustled the very center of gravity out from government’s core because people just needed government to run the like a four season streamed miniseries.  Can this nation run long without a center of gravity or no gravity at all.  I don’t think so.

A Modest Proposal for Good:

The Buddha did not point to a God, but simply instructed the ‘middle path’.  The Bible sends the message: ” I am who am” leaving nothing but the immeasurable weight of presence to the center.  If you look closely whatever God or belief you hold in your heart you will not find a political partisan. The work of Congress is to cross the aisles, meet a the center and deliver the third message after two sides confront. I am sorry sports fan but democracy and legislation could not be more different than a football game, a World Series or a tennis match. The work of the President is not to win a trophy, pick a side or self aggrandize.  Even if solutions don’t exists when the sides conflict, it is still the solution and not the winner we are looking for as a democratic society.  Solutions would be good.
