Good and Building Toward the ‘Shared Public Reality’

The second virtue of a New Democracy (Building Toward the ‘Shared Public Reality’ and Unity) is to lock into a value that when exercised separates a true democracy from the 21st century train wreck now called the Divided States of America (DSA). As a country and culture we have allowed ourselves to be divided nearly precisely in half thus neutralizing the governing capacity of our country. That is probably the only way to overthrow what we need and hope some day once again be called the United States of America (USA). Somewhere in that blitzkrieg called the internet, we got lost. The primitive brain of a nation was tapped and recruited through that internet by masters of anger, fear and rage to literally create a reality where we become our own worst enemies. Meanwhile, just as any sane person gives a raging bull its due, the true aggressors against this country know that every bull fight ends with the matador taking a bow and the bull on the ground bleeding out.

A Modest Proposal for Good

Unity begins when we look at our neighbors as full human beings through humane lenses. Never mind their politics but look for the traits you have in common. Commonality must become an aspiration and not an accidental discovery. Commonality must become a skill set. Who hasn’t taken a safety plate off an outlet in the home. You know there parts of the electrical mechanism you don’t want to touch. In our time politics has become that hot spot on the human outlet. The skill is to make unity and commonality the aspiration, and not the distinctions and differences. The irony of pluralism is distinction and difference simply are and there is no profit in trying to make yourself or your neighbor different and distinct. What makes a democracy different from any other form of government is the population commits to the mission of moving pluralism into a voyage of discovering what is in common and unifying around that commonality. This mission takes skill and commitment. That would be good.
