Good and the Paralyzing Limits of Pure Resistance

Like about seven million other patriotic Americans across the nation this writer attended a No Kings Protest in a small town with about only 250 other protesters. But the passion and creativity were on display. This week the signs and shouts are all in the closet and I have to ask; “What’s next?” I am told demonstrations may not do much political good but they show and provide participants a sense of unity and support. I agree that it feels so good not to feel alone. Yet, in some ways this writer still feels alone. The mission of this project is to build a majority and not underline a minority position.

The next year and the next election won’t be won in the streets, but rather in the ballot box. Yes the Supreme Court is considering hamstringing the vulnerable voters, but no matter how they rule, the ballot box is the ultimate focus. To resolve without horrible violence what we protested in the streets one must articulate a new position for a majority of Americans support. The next round of energy for those whose values are in conflict with the administration has be demonstrations for something new and not something old against the status quo. Democracy has been broken for a while in this 21st century. This administration is only exploiting the brokenness and is not necessarily the breaker. We have lived in a house divided for so long we are the dysfunctional family of a nation where everything is “wrong” while everyone is “right”. The private sector Combine that is harvesting this nation is just fine with that arrangement because accountability is paralyzed. The next majority, if there is to be one, must gather around a creative new consensus and ‘the next democracy’ for this century.

An Immodest Proposal for Good.

The Good Decision as a project has been proposing language that subverts the frozen lines of aggression and celebratory resistance. Pure resistance is compliance in that the resistor is bound to the aggressors agenda. We must create a new democracy that addresses abusive speech, crime and punishment, religious freedom, personal freedoms in health care, wealth, economy, resonable equity and justice. That calls for values clarification, and commitment. We must understand and accept that a majority consensus is a field of gray shades tied together by a common value set. Working the gray of humanity is called pluralism even if we live in an age that calls reaching out spineless. I call it flexibility. Common value can unite a majority even if the policy and issues of law are in constant flux. This project calls for the Next Democracy and will continue to address democracies essential. values. You the reader can subscribe (for free of course and no bothersome on fire email beyond these posts). We need to be for something new; that would be good. Join the movement for the Next Democracy in the 21st century.
