The unavoidable flaw in pure Capitalism is the spreadsheet is not the whole story even when it is the only book you read. The unavoidable problem for people right now is they are facing a competition that has never existed in the history of human kind; faux or fake people/machines being hired in the workplace. Up to now these deep fake programed machines have sounded like twelve year olds reading menu options from a boring script and we either grind our teeth or simply laugh at the crudeness of it all. Suddenly with AI masquerading as people, the competition is eating into work force. Organic people on the whole can be a troublesome bunch. Today the spreadsheet wonks are weighing mechanical compliance, cognitive breadth, programmer costs against health care benefits, over human rights and thinking maybe people are too much trouble. Meanwhile people huff and puff thinking the spreadsheet actually cares beyond the bottom line. And it doesn’t. The work of caring is the exclusive domain of humanity. The urgent problem for human people is a ticking time bomb. Right now the economy looks strong, but hiring human beings has remains sketchy. The only human indicator that shows any strength is unemployment. The experts are confused and scratching their heads because hiring unemployed people in a strong economy acts more like a liability for the first time.
A tentative proposal for Good
This writer is tentative because we are in early days for this crisis. However what stands out is for the human beings, the only real employment asset may soon be their potential depth of humanity. This, in a time when even some of our schools are dumping the humanities in the curriculum and gearing up to go head to head with automation. I think we humans will lose that battle because we are fighting battles already lost instead of playing to our strengths. Humanity has no shelf life. Humanity doesn’t stand frozen in place but boils to violence in one generation. In the rigid rules of our economy no job or vocation means poverty and poverty is a stew pot for violent rebellion. Good is our education system tooling up to teach the values of humanity, and the skills of civility and caring, as a basis for robust science and technology. Humanities are the bread of the cake, and not the frosting as we treat them today. Good is assuring a vocation for every human being and a safety net of caring about the voice of each of our children and young adults. If you can’t see it on the horizon then turn around and scan for a better strategy. Rest assured what you see today is not good, but that doesn’t mean good doesn’t exist.
