The staggering realization that as Americans and tax payers we are funding an international system of concentration camps of immigrants of uncertain legal status should awaken every generation of Americans. A British based journalist wrote an article for the New York Times which is at once clever, insightful, and I believe slightly off the mark. I will quote this article entitled: Millennials, It’s Time to Leave Hogwarts
“Liberalism is not the human default. It is a style of doing politics that can be sustained only in a society that is peaceful, affluent and high-trust all at once — a rare combination in our species’ history. Under such conditions, we might well see a widespread tolerance of free speech, a rejection of political violence and a popular faith in democratic processes. But when a society becomes more fractured and more threatened, those ideals may be quickly abandoned, and the aging elites who oversaw the process of decline will not be looked on kindly. Even — or especially — if their mistakes were borne of complacency.”
Given the history of democracy her phrase “peaceful, affluent, and high trust all at once” is historically wrong”. The birth of this nation was achieved out of not peace, but struggle and conflict, not affluent, but under the staggering poverty of General Washington’s army, and not high trust but the near crippling doubt about both the idea of liberty and independence. The mess we are in is on us now. This writer also contests the idea of blaming a single generation, namely the Millennials, or a single thought process such as liberal. It takes a village to create a catastrophe the size of the one we have. Sometimes in history the truly bad decision is deciding to make no decision at all. Not voting or not deciding is a crime committed half asleep on a moral hammock. The Orwellian instruction of the age is to resist being woke which might make sense to the undecided given whats going on outside their cocoon. We allowed this crime of an international system of concentration camps to occur because of too many people not voting, or not seeing what was clearly before their eyes. The British journalist got it right. America across all generations and ideologies, conservative, independent and liberal fell into the sleep of complacency. Our children won’t forgive this new form of passive tolerance easily. We must correct.
Urgent Suggestion for Good
Wake up. Crimes are being committed by your government. This past week only highlighted the crimes for the the people who require moral large print in order to make good decisions. We need to exercise our power now using the only two options available to avoid violence. Boycott the corporate support of these crimes against humanity, and assure that everyone you know understands the importance of broadcasting their votes for a new American commitment to democracy, justice, peace and individual human rights. Forget the nonsense of “cancel culture” for we have stepped down into the world of kidnapping and murder. Gather around and decide for the improbable but critical values of the Next Democracy. That would be good and it can’t happen too soon.
