Good, Evil’s Batting Average, and Pandora Shrugs

The interpretation I heard as a child about the myth of Pandora was her curiosity led her to open the jar or box and the evils escaped never to be collected or returned again.  It was a cautionary tale from adults told to a child to keep the paper clip collection from being stuck into an outlet out of curiosity. But the adult version of Pandora’s jar is dead serious.  America has been deluded into opening Pandora’s container again with the passage of the big beautiful bill releasing evils that will be hard to put back in the box, if not impossible.  The evils could be called: Greed, Violence, Racism, Retribution, and Deceit.  And Pandora shrugs a defeated smile: “I told you so”.

The steroid injection of irresponsible, massive cash into an extralegal armed immigration enforcement  has had the predicted outcome.  As we speak this force is renting and leasing space inside and outside the American economy to warehouse (concentration camp) human beings often detained illegally without required due process. If the funding continues for this operation, we will soon have new economy with one leg embedded firmly in a criminal enterprise.  As in the last post, when this project argued our troubles are not exclusively about the economy, this is what is meant.  This is not a subtle, ambiguous, problem.  Anyone with any sense of history, and particularly WWII, knows this.

Modest Proposal for Good

Sometimes there is no middle ground. The Secretaries of the departments involved in immigration enforcement appear to open eyes to be responsible for an organization executing criminal activity.  Justice is not a game of percentages.  Justice is not a batting average.  Justice is to be administered one person at a time inside the discipline of law.  Nothing else will do if you are really a “patriotic American”.  We cannot allow ourselves to settle for transactional justice for in that kind of system only the wealthy and powerful win.  Justice is administered and not won although easily lost.  We must reclaim the values of patriotism as was intended by our nation’s founders. That would be good.  Pandora no longer cares one way or the other, but most of us do. Vote.
