AI images that don’t identify themselves overtly as AI when they are AI, are a lie. Those lies will quickly destroy the credibility of the internet as a personal business and commercial tool. In these past 6 months this writer has inserted a caveat in his preconscious mind when coming upon a striking image or offer. The caveat is a question: “Is that unusual picture or good offer even real”. The web service providers must take some responsibility for identifying AI as AI or we will have to abandon all together the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Tik Toc etc. More importantly we will have to take second and third looks at our banking, financial, and medical websites to make sure someone hasn’t slipped us an internet miki. When that happens our new tendency as a culture for tolerating lies will take us down in short order because we have poisoned the well of our economic interactions.
We could start at the level of our current administration. We have grown used to sifting through speeches and setting aside conspicuous lies and searching diligently for any truth at all. AI is only turbocharging political propaganda while greasing the potential for deception. We must end of our lackadaisical tolerance of deception. Mistakes in politics will always occur, but lies must once again become politically toxic. That lies are tolerated now at all is ‘our bad’. The deceptive language began as spin. The denial of what happened on January 6 and the current attempt to remix the reality of those crimes and desecrations has ruptured something critical in the national sense of truth. Since then almost any falsification is not measured against the standard of truth but rather by the quality of the deception itself. America’s last ‘great’ innovation could end up being inventing a process that allows deception to outshine and bury the truth. What an epitaph for a once great nation.
A Modest Suggestion for Good.
The internet has a very short window to clean up. The big names is social and commercial media need to stop this near drunken exploitation of AI, form a summit, and use all that power to figure out how to certify and secure reality itself. Nothing short of that will do. Free speech is not a license to deception, violence and internet robbery. The internet is dirty and getting dirtier at an exponential rate. But the internet is oxygen delivery for our economy, and if the big wheels won’t clean it up, and the government remains frozen, today’s troubles will pale in comparison to whats coming up. Lies and deceptions have to end. Of course that would be good. Why do I have to say that?
