The American diaspora to Italy just had a hard rejection. Italy recently overturned the rules of citizenship and those people trying to close the ancestral loop of immigration to America and back just learned they may not be welcome as returned Italian citizens. Rejection hurts in so many ways. Being stateless is painful. Our current administration in its quest to demolish inclusion while mastering exclusion is trying to end Birthright Citizenship in the United States. Spasms of rejection up to genocide are erupting across the globe. Nations, religions, and ideologies are not nurturance communities for sadly they can pull people together with creeds covenants, ideas and flags but they do not bond with their citizens; hence the stateless person. The human family and much of the animal kingdom must bond to a nurturance community to survive. Unbonded humans can live for a time, but they often become dangerous to themselves and others and while they may find wealth they have difficulty finding love in the same trusting way the bonded know love. Unbonded animals will often pick any available animal of any species that won’t eat them to bond with as a provisional survival method leading to connection.
A conflation is “the merging of two or more sets of information, texts, ideas, or opinions into one, often in error” (Haught, John F. (1995) Using
conflation in the American political narrative is more than a simple error but instead has become a strategy. People who know better deliberately merge two unrelated ideas relying on the consuming public to buy the faulty narrative product and sleep through the obvious contradiction. Your nurturance community is not your nation, job, or ideological support group. Nurturance community is human kind sharing the unique connection of living through bonded connection, and through that context we are also morally bonded. The very diverse, important issues of an immigrating population and national need cannot be conflated with absolute law, but only managed with care and respect. There are certain dimensions of health care and gender identity we may as a society never completely agree on. But we can agree the national authority cannot resolve all these very complicated human moral issues no matter how tricky the conflations are. The awareness of this planet is now global and this is not a plug for globalism, but rather a simple irreversible fact. We know and will know more about one another across national lines than ever before. Forget “unknowing” the global reality. The days a nation could conflate the compliance and respect due a family or nurturance community are pretty much over. Some issues simply need to come off the table of law and coercion. Either a society is a free democracy or it is not.
Modest Proposal for Good.
Extreme exclusionary nationalism cannot morally succeed in the 21st century without horrific damage being done in the newly globally aware population. The human bond guarantees that. If we are healthy we cannot watch other humans suffer without suffering ourselves. Hannah Arendt’s warning that administering human affairs sails perilously close to evil stands for these borderline humanitarian/national tangles. We all must sail that journey close to evil as we sort our way through gender, health care rights, and immigration. Not to administer is to guarantee the drift into evil. Once Americans discover they are not innocent, they can untangle the conflations and accept imperfect administration aspiring to improvement. Congress so far has chosen not to administer immigration, and extreme nationalism is tearing our country apart. We must decide to take responsibility for that which nations can manage and what only the bonded nurturance community can handle. That would be good.
