Good, and Serious Levity in Resistance: Words Better than Mine, Poet: Theodore Roethke

It is Sunday.  The demands for writing yet more on the egregious behavior of our current administration is almost compulsive for this writer.  But the spiritual wisdom of many of our powerful religious traditions instructs us to take a breath on one of the week’s days and rest.  The bombast and lies will still be brewing in the American stew come Monday.  So I went to a serious and deep American Poet to find the appropriate ecumenical literature and settled on The Lizard

The Lizard by Theodore Roethke

The Time to Tickle a Lizard

Is Before or Right after a Blizzard

Now the place to begin

Is just under his Chin,  —

And here’s more Advice

Don’t Poke more than Twice

At an intimate Place like his Gizzard

Reasonable Suggestion for Good

Right now the political tragedy of greatness and exceptionalism is about to drive us crazy.  Yet nonsense in the hands of an artist of repute can be very good indeed. Humor is the earth mover of composting seriousness that leaves no room to breath and live. But breathe and live we must as long as our fate allows.  Resistance can rust if not lubricated with earthly humor.  The aerobics of good humor and the consequent chuckle will do you more good in the long term than all the rage in the world. Have a chuckle this Sunday for no good reason, that would be good.
