“What war?” asks the Vice President  “What January 6 insurrection?”  asks the President.  “What 19 trillion dollars of new investments in the American Economy?” asks the press when the administration touts a great economy that for some reason refuses to show itself. “What the hell?” asks the people who follow the news in papers, on the internet, and know their American history.  How does yesterdays news, the last two centuries of history and economic data simply go away?  George Orwell called this administration’s new propaganda device “the memory hole” in his dystopian novel 1984.  In that novel the government created the Ministry of Truth and the thought police for Oceania who simply dropped all evidence to the contrary of their government’s desires down the memory hole where it burned in a great furnace.   Welcome to Orwell’s reality.  Our leaders know you can do anything to a citizenship who retain no memory or history.

What we see going on in America has been pin point predicted by George Orwell well back in the twentieth century.  This confusion comes down to the singular mastered skill of the present government: systematic denial of reality.  When we get tired of calling everyone a liar we will have to get clinical.  These people we have selected for governance simply can’t face the truth.  That weakness is a disease as well as a moral failing. 

Modest proposal for Good

The truth is easier to find than it is to believe.  The truth in the political dimension arises out of reasonably disciplined history, politically independent journalism, and objective scientific data.  I think we already know the truth but it is the knowledge we can’t live with because after this orgy of a government, truthful news is not necessarily good news. We the People need to face our demons and our history. We really could re-engineer our economy, rewire our wasteful habits, and share the wealth but we  want to believe that those activities are just one possible idea among many. There are not so “many” corrective ideas open to us anymore to restructure.  A new economy, better habits, and sharing the wealth together compose the only road left to saving this country. So let’s take the required harder, more generous path that is less traveled.  That would be good. That might save us from ourselves.
