That any nation is a super power is an astounding bit of hubris. No nation can be a super power when nature has geologic time and sheer force on her side. Nature is the superpower and human kind’s only thrivers will be the Super-Subordinates who use their intelligence to figure out how to dance to her requirements. A recent article in from a relatively reliable news source described how the “Super Powers” were arguing over who owns the moon and the race was on for the domination of space. Rest assured a human has a better chance of traversing the South Pole region in a swim suit in winter than any nation will own the moon or dominate space.
Science is humility. Science is the lens that has informed us that the current time time span of our species is a pop of bacon fat on the hot griddle of earth’s deep history. Many of us think that is insulting and we are more important. Some think God created us to dominate nature and time. This writer believes human kind does have a spiritual mission and purpose, but strangling the earth’s processes and future is not one of them. To dominate the moon sounds more like the spread of cancer than a pinnacle of human achievement.
Urgent Proposal for Good
Re-examine the terms super and great. Life does not imitate Marvel Comics. We can only thrive if, in our humble understanding, a future depends on us becoming farmers and gardeners rather than dominators. The origin story for a large percentage of the earths population right now starts in a garden. We are subordinate to nature and must turn this understanding into a gardeners skill rather than the current super-power efforts to be insubordinate to God and nature. Our daily superlative burdened language across the board assures a disaster. If you think this is the only way to live and talk, I recommend reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Our indigenous teachers could change for us our undertanding of good is and our basis for decision making derived from a sense of good. Humility and not hubris would be good or maybe just essential in extending the span of human survival beyond the pop of hot bacon fat. Our spiritual job is not to dominate, but to take care.
