Good, Stupid Cruelty and the Power of Common Aversion

Stupid cruelty is rock bottom in terms of human attributes. If we can’t always agree on the common good we also have the option of agreeing on common aversion. Cruelty has been introduced by this current Administration as part of America’s greatness. Name calling and humiliation are the pathetic and cowardly attributes of the playground bully with more power than operating brains. I strongly think that most of us who want America back do not want to intentionally support cruelty as an attribute of our national heritage. Cruelty, politically, is ripe for any party to adopt as a common aversion. We have so many current examples of common, cowardly, stupid cruelty to work with right now.

One example is any thought that Christa Pike should be re-executed amounts to a terminal form of moral illness and mindless cruelty.  For Tennessee to use large amounts tax payer money to even try to re-execute this woman is of course wrong in the worst way but when a Republican Senator wrote on X: “The answer is simple: bring back the electric chair and deliver justice for these victims swiftly” we know something is profoundly off the tracks. Our treatment of immigrants, our detention centers and concentration camps are ripe fields of stupid cruelty that could be effectively resisted under the flag of sense of aversion. I think we could share a lot of common aversion at the polls this month to cure this American illness.

Urgent suggestion for Good

End our tolerance of stupid cruelty. Demand our President simply grow up or get out. A good decision would be for the Tennessee governor to commute the sentence for Christa Pike today immediately. She is now a unique living being and her commutation would set no impactful precedent except as an apology from the state for being incompetent.  Pike has suffered a lifetime on death row and now is the only lonely, human being in America on Post-death Row. America is not a barbaric nation.  Let us end stupid cruelty in the highest offices of governance.  Oppose live streaming executions which is only the latest expression this President’s high office mindless cruelty. We can do so much better, but perhaps the starting blocks of the campaign for better are nailed down at the threshold of becoming better human beings. Starting off the blocks under a sense of common aversion of would be a very good start.
