A million dollar bounty for citizens turning on each other? Whose money pays for that? The recent announcement by the President that he is offering 8 billion dollars in farm aid to farmers who have been suffering from his policies would be good news to farmers. There are two problems with that offer. The first is it is only happening a few weeks before the election, and secondly it is being financed by something mysterious and new in the American budget process; a presidential credit card. Not surprisingly if you give a teenager their first credit card under your own credit rating and forget to mention there are conditions and limits on spending, you shouldn’t be surprised when he takes his entire class out for a binge party. And so it is with this administration. Having focused for two years on his favorite architectural projects in honor of himself he now is showing up to at the very last moment to buy the election on credit. You can’t blame the farmers for grasping at the life ring the man is offering to help them survive the crisis he created. You have to worry about vultures haunting the polls looking for an easy million. How naive can one billionaire get?
Modest Proposal for Good
Help the farmers, but cancel the President’s credit card. Our credit rating is dropping in a world of economies where only the adults with good judgement and some integrity will survive. We are back to demanding Congress not alllow their role to be usurped to fund binge projects serving, not the public, but one man’s ego. If the President wants to protect farmers he must go to Congress and share any credit due to the legislation with that bipartisan Congress and the American people. We the People have a role to play in the spending of our tax money. Having a meaningful role is called taxation with representation. We have elections and they are not for sale. Returning the Constitution to its rightful and legal role in governance would be good..
