The human brain at times seems inadequate to the task of the civilization it has built. To remedy that problem we recently have dropped to the most convenient and immediate option of deceiving ourselves rather than rising to the task of the society we have built. We have began to lie to ourselves without shame or apology. Integrity which implies a kind of rational continuity has been too often ash canned. To write about good seems naive for all the “successful” people in the realm seem to have built their massive fortunes on the cleverest manipulations of the market with ethics, morality, and integrity playing second, third and fourth fiddle to competition which has become the end all and be all.
For more and more people their own spiritual tradition is subordinate to simple transaction and competition. To even contemplate making a single spiritual tradition a national religion in America is to contemplate subordinating God to humankind’s agenda. If we have slid this far down the pole of integrity and spirituality, why even try to reform when the leaders of our own government are not truthful and contradict themselves without consequence and with unprecedented facility? All this may be partially true but this Project believes we must try recalling our ancestors and forefathers bought us to this point in our civilization through work and cooperation and not competition. We must try to restore our government’s integrity because the members of our society closest to the ground and to the common life still remember and yearn for our essential humanity and spirit even if today’s social and political feedback loop tells a different story.
Modest Proposal for Good
To stop lying to ourselves means having the courage to face the truth. Nature doesn’t require four horsemen to usher in the truth. Nature has some hard lessons for us laying for us just beyond the rim of tomorrow if nothing changes today. Adhering to ethics makes things like democracy, ecology, science and religion possible given the impulsive fingers of humanity. Integrity is the first gear of a good decision. Making decisions based on self deception is the biblical equivalent of building a house on sand. Why try to face the truth? We have no choice either as a species or a sea of souls. Preparing the future would be good for us and our children. That is why we should try.
