Good, the 20th Century “Magna Carta” for the World and the Child in America

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was passed by the United Nations in 1948.  That Declaration has been described as the Magna Carta of the Twentieth Century. The quote below is taken from the Convention on the Rights of the Child which followed the ratification of the Universal Declaration.  Considering what is happening on the streets of this nation, the USA, we can learn from the previous century.

From the Conventions Preamble:

“Considering that the child should be fully prepared to live an individual life in society, and brought up in the spirit of the ideals proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations, and in particular in the spirit of peace, dignity, tolerance, freedom, equality and solidarity.”

Jia Lynn Yang wrote an article in the New York Times worth noting.  The article is entitled : The American Family Is at a Breaking Point. Our Politics Have Finally Noticed.  She writes: “But there are voices on the left and the right arguing for a deeper shift in society. They want a redefinition of values — a recognition that raising children is a high collective calling, one that demands the backing of the public so that anyone, regardless of gender, can become a devoted parent.” Right now good ideas like this one are being routinely taken out into the yard and blindfolded and shot with fatal  language like “left wing whacko” “communist”, “socialist”.  Yes, the idea of taking care of our children is barely hanging on and taking care of all children is still considered left wing crazy by too many of America’s slaves to the treadmill or the political trance of the day.   The good news is a quickly growing group of new often younger voters and dedicated care givers are speaking up representing support for change.  Some political party could restart their ascendency right here on this call for reform.

Modest Proposal for Good

Who can argue the assurance of safety, consistency and steady nurturing relationships make for a stabler, stronger, happier and more peaceful society in the long run.  If any person can contradict the above sentence feel free to submit your arguments to this website.  Our culture has silently  subverted the message of child care as the priority of human community in favor of money and status for a few wealthy, but hungry, fear driven, adults and look how happy and stable we are today?   We are still, albeit barely, a Republic and a public that could declare children protected “World Citizens” and afford them what they they so profoundly need to thrive.  That would be good.  But to accomplish this we need to gather in a bigger tent than we are today. Gathering to vote for all the world’s and nation’s children would be a good decision indeed.
