Good, Courage and a Nation Cowering

The Supreme Court in yesterday’s rulings on immigration has paved the way for the United States, a nation known for courage and innovation, to cower before the world and betray the very channel of of energy that built this nation; immigration.  Our President is on the verge of bringing this nation to a posture of cringing shame before a world that once admired its courage to be generous.

Generosity requires courage.  A courageous person gives beyond what is safe to give out of a strong heart.  If we send vulnerable men, women, and children who have established lives in the country under the protection of our nation’s courageous history of compassion, the crime of this government will be unforgivable.  The world will correctly see the action as unconscionable cowardice and heartlessness.  Our president will be its author.

Modest Proposal for Good

Let us not make this too complicated.  What our government is considering is no different than throwing an old woman, old man, mother or child under a moving bus just to keep a good place in line. If it weren’t so despicable it would be simply pathetic.  Neither is the required response to these crimes against humanity complicated.  We must show generosity at the level of courage as a people.  The tragic pathos of this moment in American history transcends political affiliation.  The Promise Keepers had one good quality; their name.  We have to keep our promises to the immigrants we invited in to shelter in our country and contribute to our well being.  We cannot allow “we the people” to become branded the selfish cowards our government would have us be.  Resistance would be good and one step toward restoring honor.
