This writer understands that our vice president is concerned about a drift from Christian civilization to secular global liberalism.  His concern is our nation is in a deterioration of Christian values, morality and family.  This writer finds it odd since the very Constitution to which he vowed fidelity on a Bible was built on the anticipation of a period in history to come that would have to deal with the plurality of the recently discovered globe. He has mistakenly attached the word “liberal” to a very conservative cause; the conservation of the American Constitution.  Of deepest concern he seems at odds with the very heart of the mission he has sworn to uphold. Never mind that the original immigrants to this country were actually running from forms of European oppression characterized by man made law and a largely institutional morality, often based in now discarded church dogmas. The separation of church and state was done by our forefathers to make room for religious practice and not rid the nation of religion.

The term secular global liberalism is deeply flawed. In many ways secular global liberalism is a dangerous pseudo-intellectual set of contradictions. The roots of the term “secular” are not planted in anti-religious, amoral, sentiment but rather the term means in effect “living and responding in the time you are living”. Our founding fathers lived in their time responding to an emergent understanding of a larger more complex world than their history anticipated. They effectively predicted the course of the 19’th through the 21st centuries. As for global, the term is not a political term any more than the sun is a political event. Like the sun, globalism simply is. We are a globe. We now thrive or die on how we come together as a globe and only then how we come together as nations. Finally, he and his boss have a mission of conserving the Constitution which neither of them has the intellectual fire power to improve. The issue isn’t a political conservative verses liberal, it is settling into the reality that America, as exceptional as it may be, is almost at the level of neurology, connected to the whole world and shares the world’s fate.

Modest proposal for good

We Americans are a multicultural experiment in religious freedom and not a “Christian civilization”. We never were. This Christian has always studied the words of the Christian founder Jesus whose teachings never floated over to being a Caesar. To an administration that stripped their religious beliefs of morality to make a ‘religion’ fit their interpretation of the day’s needs, I say it is a dangerous, sacrilegious, mistake. Christian Nationalism is truly an un-American secular ambition. In some ways here good is knowing your limitations and working the wheel house you are natured and qualified to work in. A critical part of the good decision is knowing what you know and what you don’t know. This mash of the medieval thought with 21st century realities can only spell trouble when the man with the masher a legally trained politician and obviously not a theologian. Lets stop pretending we are more or less than we are. That would be good.
