Good and “Who is Afraid of Walt Whitman” Reflections on Words better than Mine

America by Walt Whitman

Centre of equal daughters, equal sons,

All, all alike endear’d, grown, ungrown, young or old,

Strong, ample, fair, enduring, capable, rich,

Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love,

A grand, sane, towering, seated Mother,

Chair’d in the adamant of Time.

Reflections on Words Better than Mine

When I see what is going on in today’s America and the current government I wonder if finally we are the generation that will shrink back and lose the courage to live the American dream.  Would we pillary a poet like Walt Whitman and call him woke? The answer I think, I hope, I pray is “no”.  What we see today is an aberration that occurs in every aspirational dream.  We will re-engage in the American dream and remove the merchants of commerce and wealth from that temples of law making, law’s just application, and national administration.  It may be winter now but soon enough, God willing, the laws of human nature will again make us Americans “Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love”. No, Walt Whitman was not “woke“. He was awake. Gather your courage once again Americans, wake up, and live toward the dream.  That would be good.
